Scientific studies and technological advancements have brought about several advantages in all spheres of life. DNA technology is one such advancement. A variety of tests and examinations like forensic body fluid examination have helped criminal justice system. By examination of DNA sequences unique to that species, any type of organism can be identified. At this point of time, identification of individuals within a species is less precise although when further progress takes place in DNA sequencing technologies, it will be feasible as well as practical to make direct comparison of very large DNA segments, and even whole genomes. This exercise will help in allowing precise individual identification. Forensic scientists scan 13 DNA regions to identify individuals that vary from person to person. This data can be used in the creation of a DNA profile of that individual which is also referred to as a DNA fingerprint. Another person having the same DNA profile for a particular set of 13 regions is a chance in millions. There are several advantages of forensic identification. Some of them are- • Identification of potential suspects or criminals who’s DNA may match with the evidence left at crime scenes • Exoneration of people who are wrongly accused of crimes • Identification of crime and victims • Establishing paternity and other family relationships • With recipients in transplant programs, matching organ donors There are many other advantages of this technology. A variety of techniques are used through this technology that has helped in bringing about lot of difference in the lives of people. One of these techniques is mentioned as under-
